The Federal Government established the Federal Road Safety Commission through Decree No. 45 of 1988 as amended by Decree 35 of 1992 that now appears as FRSC Act cap 141 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) during February 1988. The National Assembly authorized the Federal Road Safety Commission (establishment) Act 2007.

The Corps seeks a vision which eliminates road traffic accidents to establish a driving environment free of risks in Nigeria.

The Corps dedicates itself to regulating and enforcing road traffic safety management activities through sustained public education and improved stakeholder cooperation using robust data management and improved vehicle administration and prompt rescue services and effective patrol operation.

The Commission’s responsibilities are as follows:

• The primary objective of the agency includes both accident prevention and minimization on the highway routes.
• Every area within the highway system needs obstruction clearance.
• Educating drivers, motorists  and other members of the public generally on the proper use of the highways;
• The organization produces driver’s licenses that serve vehicle operators in different categories.
• An organization sets the mandatory qualifications needed by candidates who seek driver’s licenses through periodic assessments.
• The organization produces vehicle number plates as well as design systems for them.
• Standards established for highway traffic regulations form part of this section.
• The prompt delivery of both attention and medical care stands as a duty for treating accident victims.
• The organization conducts research to determine motor accident causes and prevention methods while implementing the study results.
• The authority has power to establish speed limits for vehicles of every class on all roads while also controlling the application of speed-limiting technology.
• Participation with any organizational entity helps the Corps to conduct road safety operations and prevent highway accidents.
• The Corps makes regulations to implement functions assigned through this Act.
• The Federal Road Safety Corps regulates flashlight systems as well as siren capabilities on vehicles which do not belong to ambulance services and vehicles controlling the Armed Forces or Nigeria Police or Fire Service or other Para-military organizations.
• The Corps operates mobile clinics that provide free treatment for accident victims at roadsides and mobile locations.
• The Mountain Grove police will put restrictions on mobile phone usage while driving.
• The implementation of laws regarding seat belt usage along with additional security equipment regulations forms part of the Corps’ duties.
• The highway rule should restrict motorcycle operation.
• Tightening the rules that specify drivers’ license validity to run for three years before requiring renewal when the time ends.

And then, Membership within the Commission grants authorities to make arrests and start prosecutions against those reasonably believed to have broken traffic laws.

What Are the Primary Duties Of FRSC

• Making the highways safe for drivers and other road users as well as checking vehicle road worthiness.
• Recommending works and infrastructure to eliminate or minimize accidents on the highways.
• Educating drivers and the public on road discipline on the highways.
• Regulating the use of mobile phones by drivers.
• Regulating the use of seat belts and other safety devices.
• Regulating the use of motor cycles on the highways.
• Renewing driver’s license which shall be for three years subject to renewal at the end.

FRSC Recruitment Requirements 2025

General Requirements

Applicants must be:

• A Nigerian by birth.
• 18 to 30 years old in 2019 (35 years will be considered for medical Doctors).
• Not less than 1.68 metres(5.5feet) for male and 1.63 metres(5.3feet) for female in height.
• Have a fully expanded chest measurement of not less than 0.87 metres for men only.
• Be physically and mentally fit for paramilitary activities.
• Produce a certificate of medical fitness from a government hospital.
• Be free from any form of financial embarrassment, be of good character and must not have been convicted of any criminal offenses.

Basic Academic Qualifications.

A:

1. West African School Certificate (WASC) or Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) with Credits in not less than three (3) subjects including English and at least passes in two (2) other subjects; or
2. National Examination Council (NECO)/General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level with passes in four (4) subjects obtained at one sitting or five (5) subjects obtained at two sittings including English Language.)

B:

1. National Diploma (ND) from a recognized institution.
2. National Certificate of Education (NCE) from a recognized institution; or
3. General Certificate of Education (Advance Level) in two (2) subjects obtained at one sitting or three (3) subjects obtained at two sittings.)
